Gran Canaria is one of Europe's leading destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, and for a gay honeymoon it offers a rare combination: year-round sun, a genuinely welcoming scene centred on Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, and, a short drive away, mountains and harbour towns for the quieter, romantic days a honeymoon deserves. This is a guide to planning both sides of the trip, from where to base yourselves to when to come and where to escape the crowds.
The south, and days away from it
The scene, then the quieter days. Detail follows.
- Playa del Inglés if you want the Yumbo on foot.
- Maspalomas if you want the dunes and a calmer base next door.
- The beach by the dunes. Keep to marked routes.
- Maspalomas Pride in May, or Winter Pride in November, if you want the events.
- A quieter week if you want the welcome without the crowds.
- Mogán, Tejeda or Las Palmas when you want a day off the strip.
Why Gran Canaria for a gay honeymoon
Two things set it apart. First, the welcome is genuine and long-established: the south around Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas has been a hub of LGBTQ+ holidays for decades, so you can be yourselves without a second thought. Second, it is a real all-rounder: reliable winter sun, a beach and dunes, a lively scene when you want it, and enough variety in the rest of the island to fill a honeymoon with more than nightlife. It is easy to reach from much of Europe, and warm when a lot of places are not.
Where to base yourselves
The south is the heart of it. Playa del Inglés puts you closest to the scene, within walking distance of the Yumbo Centre and its nightlife, while Maspalomas next door is calmer and closer to the dunes. There is a good range of gay and gay-friendly places to stay: AxelBeach Maspalomas offers adults-only apartments with a lively social atmosphere near the Yumbo; Vista Bonita is a well-liked gay and lesbian resort of duplex apartments in a quiet residential setting; Club Torso is a men-only boutique resort with a heated saltwater pool; Aqua Beach Bungalows sits opposite the Yumbo for nightlife; and MUR Hotel Neptuno and the adults-only, LGBTQ+-friendly Playa del Sol Premium are both right by the Yumbo for comfort and convenience.
If you would rather have five-star polish and use the scene as an evening out, the area's smarter adults-only hotels are close by too; our guide to adults-only hotels in Gran Canaria covers those, and the wider Maspalomas hotels guide helps you weigh up the areas.
The Yumbo Centre by night
The Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés is the world's only LGBTI leisure shopping centre. By day it is an ordinary shopping centre; after dark it becomes the centre of the island's gay scene, with bars, terraces, drag and cabaret and clubs spread around an open-air courtyard. You can make an evening as lively or as low-key as you like, from a quiet drink on a terrace to dancing until late. It is walkable, easygoing and welcoming to newcomers.
The dunes and the gay beach
By day, the Maspalomas dunes are the draw. The reserve has a long-established gay section of beach, with the beach kiosk known as Kiosco 7 as the usual reference point out among the sand. Walking into the dunes in the softer morning or late-afternoon light is the definitive thing to do here; keep to the marked routes to protect the reserve. The beach is long enough that you can always find a quieter patch.
When to go
Gran Canaria is warm all year, so timing is really about the events and the atmosphere you want. Maspalomas Pride, usually held in early-to-mid May, is the island's biggest celebration, with a large parade and huge international crowds. Winter Pride, typically in early November, pairs the festivities with reliable winter sun. Carnival season earlier in the year brings its own parties. If you want the welcome and the scene but a calmer, more romantic honeymoon pace, come a little outside those weeks, when the south is quieter and hotels are easier to book.
Beyond the south
A honeymoon deserves more than the resort strip, and the rest of the island is easy to reach. Drive west to Puerto de Mogán, the harbour town nicknamed 'little Venice', at its loveliest in the early evening. Head up into the mountains around Tejeda and Roque Nublo for cool air, long views and dark, clear night skies. Or spend a day in the capital, Las Palmas, with its old quarter and the long, calm Las Canteras beach. These quieter days balance the buzz of the south beautifully, and the drives are part of the pleasure.
Getting there and around
Gran Canaria's airport is a little over half an hour from the southern resorts by the GC-1 motorway. If you plan to stay around Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, you can manage on foot and the occasional taxi. If you want to explore the west coast, the mountains or the north, a hire car makes the trip far easier.
Common questions
Is Gran Canaria good for a gay honeymoon?
Very. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés form one of Europe's best-established LGBTQ+ destinations, with a wide choice of gay and gay-friendly hotels, a walkable scene at the Yumbo, and a famous gay beach among the dunes, all in year-round sun.
When is the best time to go?
For the events, early-to-mid May for Maspalomas Pride and early November for Winter Pride. For a calmer, more romantic pace with the same welcome, choose a quieter week outside those dates.
One evening, just the two of you
Amid the scene and the sightseeing, it is worth setting aside one evening that is completely private and completely yours. That is what we do: a styled honeymoon picnic or private dinner, set up before you arrive somewhere chosen to suit the day and quietly cleared away afterwards, planned around wherever you are staying. We welcome every couple, and we will shape it around the two of you. Here is how it works.
