Maspalomas & Meloneras: A Couple's Guide

Maspalomas & Meloneras: A Couple's Guide

Maspalomas and its polished neighbour Meloneras are the heart of the sunny south, and together they make one of the easiest romantic bases on the island: a vast dune field, a long beach, a lighthouse to walk to, and a seafront promenade lined with places to eat. This is a guide to enjoying the area as a couple, from the obvious pleasures to the quieter ones, and how to make the most of a few days here.

Six romantic things to do in Maspalomas and Meloneras

A short local list. Hotels, restaurants and a sample day sit further down.

  1. Walk into the dunes at golden hour, then out to the lighthouse for sunset. Keep to marked routes.
  2. Meloneras promenade before dinner with a sea-view drink.
  3. Quiet beach morning away from the main access points.
  4. Evening in Puerto de Mogán once the day-trippers leave.
  5. Spa morning at one of the larger hotels for a slow start.
  6. One private evening set up for the two of you. Picnics around Maspalomas.

Getting your bearings

It helps to picture the area as one long seafront in three parts. At the western end is Meloneras, the newest and smartest stretch, with the grander hotels and an elegant promenade. In the middle sits the Maspalomas lighthouse and the palm oasis, the calmest part, right beside the dunes. To the east, the beach runs on towards Playa del Inglés, the livelier resort with the most restaurants, bars and the Yumbo Centre. You can walk between them along the front, and each has a slightly different mood.

The dunes and the beach

The Maspalomas dunes are a protected nature reserve of rolling golden sand that meets the Atlantic, and walking a little way into them, especially in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon, is the definitive thing to do here. Stick to the marked routes to protect the reserve. The beach runs for kilometres from the lighthouse towards Playa del Inglés, wide and open, with calmer, quieter stretches the further you walk from the main access points. The reserve also has a long-established gay section of beach, with the kiosk known as Kiosco 7 as the usual reference point.

The lighthouse and the Meloneras promenade

The Maspalomas lighthouse anchors the western end of the beach, and from it the Meloneras promenade runs west past smart hotels, shops and restaurants. It is a lovely, level evening walk, busiest and prettiest around sunset, when the light turns gold on the water. This is the elegant side of the south: unhurried, well-kept, made for a slow pre-dinner stroll.

Where to eat

The Meloneras boulevard is the area's dining strip. El Churrasco Meloneras is a well-regarded grill with a panoramic terrace looking out to the ocean and the lighthouse, good for a special dinner. Ciao Ciao Meloneras is a long-standing Italian right on the promenade with sea views and a big terrace for watching the sun go down. Restaurante Callao, within the Lopesan Meloneras resort, cooks Mediterranean and Atlantic dishes over a Josper charcoal oven with lighthouse views. And for cocktails, champagne and small plates with the sea in front of you, Café del Mar sits on the Boulevard El Faro near the lighthouse. Book the sea-facing tables ahead in high season.

Where to stay

Meloneras holds the grander five-stars, the palm oasis is the calmest base near the dunes, and Playa del Inglés next door is livelier with more restaurants and nightlife. Because there is a lot to weigh up, we have a dedicated guide to the best hotels in Maspalomas for couples, with picks for quiet luxury, adults-only beachfront and boutique design.

Romantic things to do

  • Walk into the dunes at golden hour, then out to the lighthouse for sunset.
  • Take the long way along the Meloneras promenade before dinner and stop for a drink with a sea view.
  • Spend a slow morning on a quieter stretch of the beach, away from the main access points.
  • Drive west for the evening to Puerto de Mogán, at its prettiest once the day-trippers leave.
  • Book a spa morning at one of the larger hotels for a lazy, restful start to a day.
  • Set aside one evening for something private, set up just for the two of you.

A suggested romantic day

If you want a shape to build a day around, try this. Start slow with a late breakfast and a swim while the beach is quiet. Rest through the middle of the day, out of the strongest sun. In the late afternoon, walk into the dunes as the light softens, then out to the lighthouse to watch the sun go down. Take the promenade back towards Meloneras, stop for a drink with a sea view, and let dinner run late. One lovely thing in the morning, one in the evening, and space to breathe in between.

Practical notes

The south is reliably sunny for most of the year, but winter evenings cool down, so bring a light layer for dinner outside. The area is flat and walkable around the promenade and beach, though a hire car helps if you want to explore the west coast or the mountains. Sunset shifts by well over an hour between winter and summer, so check the time for your actual dates and arrive twenty minutes early to settle in.

Common questions

What is the best time of day for the dunes?

Early morning or the hour before sunset. The light is softer and warmer, the sand is cooler underfoot, and the crowds are thinner. Midday is hot and harsh. Whenever you go, keep to the marked routes to protect the reserve.

Is Maspalomas walkable without a car?

Yes, around the seafront. The promenade, beach, lighthouse and the restaurants of Meloneras and Playa del Inglés are all walkable. You only really need a car to explore the rest of the island.

One evening, taken care of

If you would like one evening here that you do not have to plan, that is what we do. A private, styled picnic or private dinner around Maspalomas is set up before you arrive, timed to the light, and quietly cleared away afterwards, arranged around wherever you are staying. Here is how locations and logistics work.
