A good dinner can be the centre of a romantic evening, and Gran Canaria has more range than its resort reputation suggests: a Michelin-starred kitchen in a harbour town, sea-view terraces along the southern promenades, and a genuinely creative scene in the capital. This is a guide to some of the island's most romantic tables for a special evening as a couple, with a note on booking each, followed by an alternative worth considering if you want the two of you and nobody else.
Romantic tables at a glance
Named restaurants first, then the private-table alternative. Detail for each is below.
- Los Guayres, Puerto de Mogán. Michelin-starred; book the terrace weeks ahead.
- El Churrasco Meloneras. Grill and panoramic terrace towards the lighthouse.
- Restaurante Callao, Meloneras. Josper cooking and lighthouse views.
- Ciao Ciao Meloneras. Italian terrace on the promenade for sunset.
- Café del Mar, Meloneras. Cocktails and small plates by the lighthouse.
- Harbourside Puerto de Mogán. Simpler grilled fish once the day-trippers leave.
- Las Palmas creative tables if you want a city evening rather than a sea view.
- Private table for two, nobody else. Romantic private dinner.
What makes a restaurant romantic here
It is rarely just the food. The most romantic tables on the island tend to share three things: a view or a setting that gives the evening a sense of place, usually the sea or the sunset; enough space between tables to talk without leaning in; and a pace that lets the evening unfold rather than rushing you out. Keep those in mind and you can find a romantic table almost anywhere; the ones below simply do it particularly well.
Los Guayres, Puerto de Mogán
The island's benchmark for a serious dinner, Los Guayres holds a Michelin star and sits inside the Cordial Mogán Playa hotel in Puerto de Mogán. The kitchen builds tasting menus around Atlantic seafood and Canary Island ingredients, and for a special occasion the terrace, set on a traditional Canarian balcony over the hotel gardens, is the table to ask for. It serves dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, and books up well in advance, so reserve three to four weeks ahead if you can. This is the one to choose for an anniversary, an engagement dinner, or a meal that needs to feel like the event of the trip.
El Churrasco Meloneras
On the Meloneras boulevard, El Churrasco is an elegant grill known for high-quality meat and a panoramic terrace looking out over the Atlantic towards the Maspalomas lighthouse. It is a good choice for a celebratory dinner in the south when you want a refined room and a sea view rather than a tasting menu. Ask for a terrace table at sunset.
Restaurante Callao, Meloneras
Also in Meloneras, within the Lopesan resort, Restaurante Callao cooks Mediterranean dishes with Atlantic touches over a Josper charcoal oven, with a focus on premium cuts and fish and views towards the lighthouse. It is a slightly more contemporary option than the classic grill, and another reliable choice for a smart dinner on the southern seafront.
Ciao Ciao Meloneras
Also on the Meloneras promenade, Ciao Ciao is a long-standing Italian with a large terrace overlooking the beach, well set up for watching the sun go down over dinner. It is more relaxed than the options above, and a reliable, romantic choice for a warm evening of pasta and a good bottle of wine with the sea in front of you.
Café del Mar, Meloneras
For the aperitif rather than the main event, Café del Mar sits on the Boulevard El Faro near the lighthouse, with a strong cocktail and champagne list and small plates to go with the view. It makes a lovely start to an evening before dinner further along the promenade.
Puerto de Mogán, harbourside
Beyond its Michelin-starred name, Puerto de Mogán is a romantic place to eat more simply. The harbour and the canals are lined with tables, and finding one near the moored boats for grilled fish as the light fades is one of the gentler pleasures of the west coast. Come in the early evening once the day-trippers have gone.
Las Palmas: the creative side
If you are staying in or visiting the capital, Las Palmas has the island's most inventive cooking. Muxgo is among the best known, a farm-to-table kitchen working closely with local, seasonal produce, and it suits couples who care more about a thoughtful, ingredient-led meal than a sea view. The city also rewards simply wandering the old quarter of Vegueta or the streets behind Las Canteras beach and picking somewhere that catches your eye; the food scene here is the island's most varied.
Booking tips
- For the Michelin-starred Los Guayres, book several weeks ahead and choose the terrace for a special evening.
- Everywhere with a sea view, ask specifically for a terrace or window table, and time it for sunset.
- Check opening days: several of the best kitchens close early in the week or for a seasonal break.
- Dress leans smart-casual at the higher end; a few places ask for long trousers at dinner.
- For a birthday or anniversary, mention it when you book; most kitchens will do something small.
Common questions
Where is the most special-occasion restaurant on the island?
For a landmark dinner, the Michelin-starred Los Guayres in Puerto de Mogán is the island's benchmark. For a sea view in the south, El Churrasco or Callao in Meloneras. For creative cooking, Muxgo in Las Palmas.
Do you need to book far ahead?
For the top tables, yes. Los Guayres in particular can need three to four weeks. Sea-view terraces in Meloneras fill quickly at sunset in high season, so book those a few days ahead at least.
The most private table of all
As lovely as these rooms are, the most romantic dinner is sometimes the one with no other tables at all. That is what a private dinner for two gives you: a meal cooked and served just for the two of you, in a setting we arrange to suit the evening, whether that is a terrace, a garden or a quiet spot by the sea. If you would rather have the chef come to you, we also offer full private dining wherever you are staying.
